How to Fit in at a New Job
Friday, January 29th, 2010
Getting a new job is a great, yet scary feeling. It is a new place with new people. You want to put your best foot forward to make a good first impression. In order to make sure you do this, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
Be a Positive Addition
While it may be tempting to tell horror stories about the last job you had, it does not give the right impression. Instead, concentrate on how excited you are to be in the location you are at. If asked about your old job, stick to the high points. You do not need to give an interview answer, but you should avoid making yourself look like the type to gripe.
Socialize With Co-Workers
At lunch, it is a good idea to invite some of your new co-workers to dine with you. This is a great time to find out details about the office including who is in charge. Do not fall into the trap of gossiping about those around you. Instead stick to getting to know those who are dining with you and about the company you are working for.
Pay attention to the how much you socialize on the first day. Try to socialize as little as possible during work hours. You do not want to give the impression that you sit around talking all day. At the same time, do not be a shut-in or you will be ostracized from the group dynamic during break periods. With the right effort, you will fit in easily.
