It can help, especially if you’re feeling a little hopeless about finding just the right job, to remember that there’s not just one way to land your dream job.

1.	The newspaper classifieds are great place to start, but don’t stop there! You may find ads for some very appealing positions listed in the classifieds, but some companies don’t ever advertise their jobs available in newspapers, and maybe not the exact one you read.

2.	Network by mentioning to everyone you know and everyone you run into that you’re looking. You never know when you’ll run into just the right person who knows of an available job that’s just up your alley.

3.	Go to job fairs in your field. You can introduce yourself to any number of company representatives at job fairs. Have plenty of resumes on hand, wear your best office clothes and a big smile, and show them what you’ve got.

4.	Online job banks are a good place to look, too. More and more companies advertise their jobs online and actively recruit at job boards and message boards. Post your resume with each one in case a prospective employer is looking—give yourself the best chance possible.

The complete purpose of a resume is to get you the interview. You won’t get the job based on your resume, nor will you get a second interview based on the resume. Both those things require you to shine during the interview. But without a great resume, you’ll never get the chance.

1.	Less is more. Don’t have a 3-page resume. And in fact, unless you have decades of detailed experience and you’re applying for a job that requires it, keep the resume to one page only. This makes it much more easily scannable and easier to digest. Remember, the interviewer is busy, too. Present him or her with too long a resume, and they might miss the really important parts if they opt not to read the whole thing.

2.	Don’t use a blanket resume. Have your main resume, but be able to adjust it with each new job. It could be as simply as putting a different past employer on top, or changing the objective slightly. Do something to make it specifically for one job you’re trying for and it will up your chances of being noticed and getting in the front door for that all important first interview.

Chances are, the job you’re applying for is going to require to you to do some business writing—memos, letters, outlines, plans and proposals are possible. So not only should you brush up on your writing skills, you should use the opportunity of writing a letter to really impress a potential employer.

If you’ve already had the interview, then it’s assumed that you sent a cover letter and a resume. And hopefully, as soon as you left the interview you crafted a quick, polite thank-you letter and dropped it in the mail. Now a week has gone by, maybe two, and you’re starting to really get uptight about it.

Write a follow-up letter. It’s best to do this about a week after an interview, unless they indicated it would take longer to make a decision. You don’t want to wait too long and have it reach them after they’ve already made their decision to hire someone other than you.

Mention that you hope to have the opportunity to work there and how much you appreciate the time they took to interview you. If there’s something you can mention about your skills and how they might apply to the company, do so now.

These 2 job search mistakes are each at the opposite end of the spectrum, and people make them every day.

1.	Taking a job simply because it’s offered. Sometimes this isn’t a mistake so much as a necessary step to make ends meet. Taking any job that’s offered might be a financial decision. But if you can afford not to do that, you’ll probably be better off when it comes to your career. If you take a job you don’t really want and it serves to make you miserable, it can quickly sour you against your entire industry.

2.	Turning down a job that’s less than your dream job. If you’re offered a job and it’s not the one you want, but it’s in the industry and close, it could be a stepping stone to that dream job. A caveat—if it’s a job that will absolutely make you miserable, you’re best to turn it down if you can. But just don’t take an all or nothing approach, that anything less than your ideal job isn’t worth your time. You can gain valuable skills and experience from a similar job that can make it more likely you get the job you want.

One of the keys to getting a dream job interview is to have a winning cover letter.

One of the keys to getting a dream job interview is to have a winning cover letter. Of course, a poor resume will cancel out a dazzling cover letter, so be realistic. If your resume doesn’t demonstrate the skills and experience needed for the job, no cover letter will get you the interview.

But if you’re one of many candidates and you have the necessary skills, a great cover letter can make sure you end up in the “call” pile instead of a folder in the back of the cabinet.

1.	Find cover letter templates in books or online and use the one most appropriate for your situation. Just take their format but plug your information in. It will look professional, which is vitally important.

2.	Introduce yourself briefly and be sure to mention which position you’re applying for. A company might have many positions open. Point out something relevant that wasn’t on your resume. And be sure to thank them for considering you.

3.	Don’t forget to flatter them. Mention something about their company that you like, or some high point you read in the newspaper about them. This shows them that you’re familiar with their company and they’re not just one of 20 firms you applied at (even if they are).

If you’re looking to find a job just to have some work experience and make an income while you’re working toward your chosen career path, there are a variety of paths you can take. If you can’t find an entry level job or summer job in your chosen industry, you can choose a few less glamorous jobs that actually have more potential than most people realize.

1.	Fast food. It might be your chosen career to run the register at the local chicken palace, but it’s honest work that will generally work around a school schedule. And who knows, you might find you enjoy the atmosphere and decide to work your way up within the organization. Fast food assistant managers and general managers make a good salary with benefits. And your experience can easily apply to a variety of similar jobs like resort restaurant management and hospitality, and managing just about any workforce.

2.	Customer service. Most office jobs require that employees have good customer service skills. If you work as a customer service representative you’ll have that in spades, as well as good phone experience, problem-solving experience and even crisis management. If you have customer service skills, those can apply to almost any industry where you deal with customers or clients, which is most careers.

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking care of the sick or running a computer network, your dream could help you end up with a dream job.

1.	Nursing. This field, like most medical fields, is in very high demand and that doesn’t look to change. Some places are so desperate for nurses that they have high hiring bonuses and more bonuses if you remain for a year or more. There’s a nursing shortage in the United States, so if this is something you feel like you have the patience and temperament to enjoy, it’s a great field to get into.

2.	Database Administration. This requires special training and knowledge of computers and database software. But more companies use databases than ever before, and so administrators are required to manage them and keep the system up and running smoothly, because it’s a system critical function for many businesses today.

If you’ve ever been interested in either of these fields but are unsure, pick up a newspaper and look through the help wanted ads. Ads for nurses and those with specialized database and computer knowledge usually dominate the page.

Experts don’t think that’s likely to change. Both of these fields are predicted to continue to grow rapidly over the next 10 years.

Some jobs are evergreen because there always seems to be a demand for good workers, while others seem to grow and ebb with certain trends and economic times. These jobs look to be some of the best for the rest of 2009 and into the future.

1.	Nursing/Medical Careers: The nursing shortage has been going on for years and shows no signs of stopping. Many hospitals, nursing homes and other organizations offer substantial hiring bonuses for nurses who come into the organization and stay and prescribed amount of time. If you have any interest in the medical field nursing and medical jobs are excellent to get into, and they only look to grow.

2.	Computers: With more and more of the things we do each day dependent on computers, it’s no wonder that this is a hot field. The prospects only look better as computers take over more and more tasks.

3.	Green Jobs: With the new environmental awareness sweeping the United States and the world, going green is big business. Some companies have opted to go green, while other companies have made green existence their purpose for being. Corporate jobs in green industries only look to increase, because it’s unlikely that environmental awareness will suddenly become unnecessary.

For people looking for green careers and green jobs, there are a variety of ways to contribute to this movement and have a great career at the same time.

A person doesn’t have to be an environmentalist expert or a social engineer to be able to work in a green job. Any company that promotes sustainability, like companies that sell recycled products or companies that are working on technologies to be used in recycling, clean energy or other aspects of environmentally friendly operations all offer green jobs.

Not everyone has to be an engineer. If you’re handy, you could train to install solar panels or green roofs. Someone with ability to convey information can be a salesperson for a green system of some type, or a customer service representative answering questions about green products. A computer administrator can help run the servers and databases that allow the company to operate efficiently.

There are a number of other positions available in almost every “green” company there is. You don’t have to be a scientist or an engineer to be able to find a dream job in a green company today, and the available jobs in green companies and sustainable systems look to be on the rise.

The layoffs and downsizing during the current economic recession makes some careers look pretty bleak, especially given all the graduates unable to find jobs in those industries. But there are certain sectors where anyone with experience and a little training or education can find work almost anytime and never go without a job.

1.	Computers. Any field dealing with computers like database administration, IT, networking, programming and computer engineering is wide open. Anyone with the proper training can almost always find a job in this sector.

2.	Medical careers. From nurses to physical therapists to phlebotomists, medical staff are in high demand. More people need to become physicians and surgeons as well as lab technicians and speech pathologists.

3.	Education. Fewer people are becoming teachers today so the shortage is causing problems. Someone with teaching credentials should be able to find a job in short order.

4.	Environmental careers. With the focus on global warming and other environmental concerns, jobs in the green sector are booming and look to continue to grow as people become more concerned about their environment.
