The complete purpose of a resume is to get you the interview. You won’t get the job based on your resume, nor will you get a second interview based on the resume. Both those things require you to shine during the interview. But without a great resume, you’ll never get the chance. 1. Less is more. Don’t have a 3-page resume. And in fact, unless you have decades of detailed experience and you’re applying for a job that requires it, keep the resume to one page only. This makes it much more easily scannable and easier to digest. Remember, the interviewer is busy, too. Present him or her with too long a resume, and they might miss the really important parts if they opt not to read the whole thing.
2. Don’t use a blanket resume. Have your main resume, but be able to adjust it with each new job. It could be as simply as putting a different past employer on top, or changing the objective slightly. Do something to make it specifically for one job you’re trying for and it will up your chances of being noticed and getting in the front door for that all important first interview.
