These 2 job search mistakes are each at the opposite end of the spectrum, and people make them every day. 1. Taking a job simply because it’s offered. Sometimes this isn’t a mistake so much as a necessary step to make ends meet. Taking any job that’s offered might be a financial decision. But if you can afford not to do that, you’ll probably be better off when it comes to your career. If you take a job you don’t really want and it serves to make you miserable, it can quickly sour you against your entire industry.
2. Turning down a job that’s less than your dream job. If you’re offered a job and it’s not the one you want, but it’s in the industry and close, it could be a stepping stone to that dream job. A caveat—if it’s a job that will absolutely make you miserable, you’re best to turn it down if you can. But just don’t take an all or nothing approach, that anything less than your ideal job isn’t worth your time. You can gain valuable skills and experience from a similar job that can make it more likely you get the job you want.
